The Year of Yellow

The colour took over the Aussie Open in tennis as Novak and Andy’s yellow accents battled it out in the final. Not to be outdone, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, David Ferrer, Maria Sharapova, Caroline Wozniacki and Ana Ivanovic couldn’t help themselves either.

In golf, Adidas launched the Adizero but sadly, forgot who they were dealing with (too many badly-dressed golfers). The result: more than a few horror looks, but at least Sergio Garcia got it right.

And soon to make its debut, the Golden State shirt jersey from Adidas has received mixed reviews (I like it).

I’m suddenly feeling the need for yellow high-tops.

Polish For Beginners & Wozniacki’s Stella McCartney

In the Polish language, the “w” makes the “v” sound. Having a first name with a “w” that sounds like a “v” is a linguistic detail that forever haunts me. You’d be surprised at the number of people who mispronounce my name even after I correct them once, even twice. And after the second, third, fourth time, I no longer have the heart, or the energy, to remind them that no, my parents didn’t name me after a hot dog gone bad—”mal-weiner,” get it? (It’s that or Velveeta but then they’d at least have the “v” right.)

Caroline Wozniacki has a similar problem. Although she was born in Denmark, her parents are both Polish, hence that strong, Polish “ski” surname. (Side note: Her mother Anna played volleyball for Poland.) Caroline is actually “Karolina,” or at least that’s what the Poles call her. All the other non-Polish sports announcers naturally butcher her name and take a lovely strong, European moniker and turn it into an ugly variation that, when said quickly five times comes out sounding like “wacky.” The actual pronunciation is “Voz-nee-ats-kee” or go here if you want to hear how it’s pronounced.

On a style note, Wozniacki is sponsored by adidas by Stella McCartney so she’s one of the best-dressed players in tennis. She shined last week in a red number and although I am not fan of the jewellery, unless it’s from Rory of course, I love the matching red nails. Speaking of jewellery, let’s discuss Sharapova’s jewellery problem very soon. And good luck to Wozniacki who plays today.

As for the rest of the collection, Ms. McCartney can do no wrong and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for the London Olympics.
