In 2008, Game of Style and friends made a trip to Seattle for three reasons (in no particular order):
1. A break from the brutal Canadian winter.
2. To check out the Emerald City.
3. And some kid named Kevin Durant.
Along with our good friend Rodney, we just had to see this young, gangly rookie, who would lead our adopted home team the Supersonics out of the NBA desert, with our own eyes. The kid was special; he just had it. The Sonics lost that night (it was u-g-l-y), but man, this Durant kid was spectacular. But in just a few short months after that game, Mr. Clayton Bennett stole the Sonics from us, and the Pacific Northwest, like a thief in the night.
Bye bye KD.
Now, sources at ESPN are saying the owners of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings have sold off a majority stake in the team to a Seattle group intending to move the team back to the Emerald City this fall. We’re not quite there yet but it looks like the beloved Supersonics are close to returning home.
Hopefully, we can start speculating on the team’s new uniforms soon and petition to bring back the vintage Sonic look. Just remember never to mention the fact that the team still lost KD, Russell Westbrook and a likely, plenty of future world championships.
P.S. The title of this post is a nod to Oasis for all you non-fans.
