Rory McIlroy turned the golf world upside down over the weekend with another performance for the ages at the PGA Championship. Heading into Sunday’s action, “Glory’s Last Shot” (a.k.a. the year’s final major) looked to be up for grabs. Then, Rory turned in one of the best performances you will ever see, matching his eight-shot victory at last year’s U.S. Open.
Most sports nerds, like myself, did a double-take when they saw golf’s next big thing saunter to the first tee wearing a bright red Oakley shirt. Hold on a second, I’m not sure wearing red is a good idea, that’s Tiger’s colour. But then Rory did what he seems to do well: he destroyed another field of the best golfers on the planet, including one Eldrick “Tiger” Woods.
When asked later about the colour choice, history was not lost on the young Northern Irish superstar. He assured everyone that if he and Woods were paired up, he would have called off the red vs. red showdown. None of the fashion drama mattered in the end however, as it seems the new World No. 1 earned the right to wear whatever he sees fit.
It might be time for Rory’s girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki to rock some red at the U.S. Open!
