ESPN’s Body Issue: The Awkward, the Inspiring and the Beautiful

ESPN The Magazine came out with its fourth annual Body Issue yesterday featuring 27 athletes in the buff. We agree wholeheartedly with the tagline, “Bodies We Want,” and all of the athletes look gorgeous but some of the photos, well, we can’t help but offer our two cents.

There are a lot of boring images (Daniela Hantuchova, Walter Dix, Tyson Chandler), some amazing shots (Maya Gabeira, Megan Hodge, Ronda Rousey and Anna Tunnicliffe) and a couple unfortunate photos of Rob Gronkowski that reminde us much too much of Terry Richardson photography.

Check out the entire portfolio here and here’s our salute to the good, the bad and the awkward:

Best use of a prop: jockey Mike Smith and his horse.

Worst use of props: decathlete Ashton Easton and all that sand. Ouch!

Most inspiring: paralympic rower Oksana Masters. Please read her bio.

Best “What happened to gravity? moment”: gymnast Danell Leyva.

Most awkward leg shot: soccer player Carlos Bocanegra.

Worst disappearing nipple: third player on the left from the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team. (Go to the portfolio to see a larger image.)
