Last April Fool’s Day, I played a little trick on the readers of the online magazine I was working for at the time. I wrote about something I made up called GapStrips, dental strips that would help you achieve the gap-toothed trend that was starting to become popular in fashion and pop culture at the time. I referenced an article on Refinery29 about “the latest must-have accessory,” and the previous year both The Guardian and the Daily Mail wrote about the trend.
Earlier this week Game of Style’s good friend and loyal reader Bruce sent me an e-mail with the subject: “Does this remind you of a certain April Fool’s gag?” The link was to a slightly tardy but still on-trend piece in The New York Times all about the popularity of gap-toothed smiles in fashion. “Just post a photo of Bobby Clarke and you have a Game of Style post,” Bruce wrote in another e-mail. Brilliant. After Googling Bobby Clarke (rather than posting a photo here, I will let you discover the toothless wonder for yourselves) I searched: “toothless hockey players,” and the floodgates opened.
Who needs GapStrips when you can do it the old-fashioned way and just play a little hockey instead. Thanks Bruce.
