Pebble Beach: A place where style once ruled. The Pebble Beach Pro-Am used to be the place for golf and style. Back in the 1940s, 50s and 60s, Bing Crosby was the ring leader and the “who’s who” of cool went like this: Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Bob Hope, Arnold Palmer, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Jack Lemmon and Clint Eastwood.
Now, these men knew how to dress. Check out Bing Crosby and Arnold Palmer holding court. Love Crosby’s scarf and hat, and Palmer looks every bit the greatest player in the game—sweet cardigan and the perfect upturned collar touch!
In the 70s, we saw the emergence of the one and only Clint Eastwood at Pebble Beach. The man just looks good.
So what happened? Where is the style and swagger that used to make this the event of the year? Sadly, the tournament has been on a slow decline over the past 15 years.
Now, we’re left with a bunch of middling “celebrities.” This year’s line-up: Ray Romano (never made me laugh—never), Bill Belichick (I wonder if he’ll be sporting his hoodie with cutoff sleeves), Darius Rucker (yes, seriously, the guy from Hootie and the Blowfish), Josh Duhamel, Kenny G and Michael Bolton! And we wonder why golf is no longer as cool as it once was. At least Bill Murray will be there.
